RoadsideFans featured book Glass Bottom Boats and Mermaid Tails by Tim Hollis The author of Dixie Before Disney takes us on a journey to Florida's natural springs, focusing on five of the most popular: Silver Springs, Wakulla Springs, Rainbow Springs, Weeki Wachee, and Homosassa Springs. Rides in glass bottomed boats enthralled earlier tourists, but the boom years following World War II brought many add-on attractions- some tasteful but mostly tacky. Photographs (many in color) and reproductions of vintage travel brochures capture the flavor of that era, as we visit such attractions as the Early American Museum (with an outsized neon sign on the roof) and Six Gun Territory, which used any trick it could - pretty girls in the saloon or even a decidedly un-Western skyride - to convince people to stop.
